A play sofa is worth it if your children will use it most days, both as a seat and as something to build with. It's less worth it if you want a living room that always looks finished, or if you have no spare floor for play days. Our Play Sofa is 160 × 80 × 56 cm, has 8 pieces and opens out to 160 × 172.5 cm. Its covers wash at 30 °C, and the foam and fabric have a 3-year warranty. Those are the things you pay for, compared with a toy or a small kids' armchair.
We make play sofas, so we're not neutral. That's why this article also covers the downsides, and the families who'd be happier without one.
| A play sofa is likely worth it if | It's probably not worth it if |
|---|---|
| Your children will use it most days | It would come out once a month |
| You want a seat and a building set in one | You need seating and nothing else |
| You have room for 160 × 80 cm, or 120 × 60 cm for the Mini, plus space to build | There's no spare floor in the room |
| You don't mind the room in pieces on play days | You want the living room tidy all the time |
A play sofa is a sofa made of separate foam pieces. Children take it apart and rebuild it as a den, a slide or a tunnel. Then it goes back together as a sofa. Here's what that means in numbers for our 160 cm Play Sofa.

The Play Sofa Mini has the same 8 pieces in a smaller size: 120 × 60 × 45 cm, with a 20 cm seat.

It also matters how the sofa looks on days when nobody is building. In calm fabrics like Teddy or corduroy, a play sofa sits in the living room like any other piece of furniture.

A simple way to judge any toy or piece of kids' furniture is cost per use. Divide the price by the number of days it will actually be used. A toy that's forgotten two weeks after a birthday costs a lot per day. A sofa used most days costs very little per day.
Say it's used every day for 3 years. That's about 1,100 days of use. Even at 4 days a week, it's over 600 days. Divide the price on the product page by either number. Then compare it with the last toy that ended up at the back of a cupboard.
Three questions give you an honest answer:
If the answer is yes to all three, a play sofa is good value. If it will come out once a month, it isn't.

60,000 families have chosen Shappy since we started sewing our sofas in the EU in 2021. Parents have left more than 700 reviews across our shops. You'll find them on our reviews page.
“It’s become the heart of our living room. During the day it’s a playground, at night it’s our movie night setup, so comfy when laid flat!” Jason, father of three.

It is if it's used most days, as a seat and for play. Used daily for 3 years, a sofa gets about 1,100 days of use, which keeps the cost per day low. If it would come out now and then, a cheaper toy is the more sensible buy.
It depends on what you need. A regular kids' sofa is simpler if you want seating and nothing else. A play sofa makes more sense if you also want something children can build dens, tunnels and slides with.
Some children build every day and some go through phases. Because a play sofa is also the sofa they sit on, it stays in use between building phases. New build ideas and add-ons like the Arches or the Slide give it a fresh start.
It costs more than a toy, it needs floor space and the room will be in pieces on play days. Returns take effort, because an unpacked sofa has to be packed carefully and you pay for return delivery.
